Sustainability

Black Mountain was founded in 2005, to share our knowledge and passion for Montenegro and the Western Balkans to support the development of sustainable tourism. We work together with our suppliers, partners, clubs, non-profits and communities to preserve Montenegro’s unique cultural and natural heritage.

We are members of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) and Leave No Trace, as well as Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA). These organisations provide us with opportunities for constant learning, resources and networking within our industry.

Black Mountain was responsible for introducing the Leave No Trace programme of guidelines and education for outdoor recreation (minimising impact on the environment) to Montenegro in 2008, together with support from the UNDP (United Nations Development Program in Montenegro). Thanks to this training program Montenegro now has its own Master Educators and Trainers who are qualified to teach the Leave No Trace principles.

Black Mountain staff and partners have participated in and taught several seminars in Montenegro and the Western Balkans, on sustainable tourism product development. Black Mountain's Directors both hold the GSTC Sustainable Tourism Certification.

In 2023 we have worked towards the Travelife Partner program under the SUSTOUR project which is co-funded by the COSME programme of the European Union and created a new Sustainability Policy which can be downloaded below.
