Before the relatively recent arrival of roads, logs from the Tara Canyon had to be transported by river into Bosnia. Specialist river guides built basic log rafts to travel downriver with the timber. The Pendek family from Foca in Bosnia have been in the business for more than 4 generations, they have teamed up with Black Mountain to recreate this epic journey.
The journey spans 149km of river with overnight accomodation either in wooden huts or wilderness camping beside the river. Our guides will share the history of the river and introduce you to some of the people who live along its banks. We visit traditional homes to sample locally produced honey, cheese and rakija!
We traverse sections of the river only accessible by raft and home to some of Europe's last wild large mammals.
Our log rafts are built and operated in the traditional way. Each raft is a basic platform with two wooden tillers (fore and aft) and wooden seats. Luggage, camping equipment and food is still carried in the center of the raft wrapped in tarpaulin. Nowadays the log rafts are dismantled and returned to the head of the river and recycled for the next journey!
Historically log rafting on the Tara has been considered safe, certainly no river guide ever wore a lifejacket. However, we provide full safety equipment (helmet and lifejacket) and a full safety briefing is given. Bring swimwear, your passport, dry clothes, sun cream, a camera and a smile !
