Montenegro's dramatic topography means that temperatures and climates vary wildly betwen the coast and the inland regions. The coastline of Montenegro from Herceg Novi to Ulcinj is sunny with a Mediterranean style climate. Winters however can be dry and sunny or wet and rainy, however not cold. The Bay of Kotor with it's steep coastal mountains rising to almost 2,000 m has it's own micro climate and so do the two main peaks in this area, Mounts Lovcen and Orjen. While these peaks can be deeply snow covered for five months of the year, at sea level the orange and lemon trees bloom and spring flowers flourish. The climate is also affected strongly by the North wind (Bura - cold) and the Yugo (the warm south wind).

Inland the climate is alpine in nature with snow winters and short but warm and even hot summers.
